You and a friend each take one of the switch controllers, and a second player pops up you share the current party of Pokemon. You do still battle other trainers and gym leaders, and I think the Legendary Birds. It makes the overworld encounters more like Pokemon Go: instead of battling wild Pokemon like a traditional game, you aim and throw the Pokeball similar to the mobile game. If you're trying to get back into Pokemon and have nostalgia for the Kanto region (Red/Blue/Yellow, or the very early Pokemon anime episodes) that's where this game takes place, with Professor Oak, Brock, Misty, Jessie, James, etc. They only feature the original 151 (and then Melmetal from Pokemon Go). Keep in mind that there are new versions of the cartridges pre-loaded with the Expansion Pass (Isle of Armor, Crown Tundra) so you don't have to buy the DLC digitally, but that's $80 new from Amazon. Pokemon Go (mobile game) can send into Home now, too. Home supports GTS (post Pokemon asking for specific Pokemon in return) and bulk wonder trading. With the exception of the missing Pokemon, anything available in Sw/Sh can be transferred to/from Pokemon Home (the storage and trading app). (Raids can also be done offline, but some can be difficult with just NPC allies.) If you've got online ($20/yr) it has in-game surprise trade (wonder trade), and raids. If you have the Expansion Pass, Isle of Armor has apricorns for special Pokeball types.

I think I like all the gym leaders except Milo. Galar region has some great locations (and some not-so-great). It's missing about 230-ish Pokemon, but that still means more than 600 are available. Get Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee if you want a simpler game, a nostalgia trip, or something you can play with a friend/family member. Tl dr: Get Sword/Shield if you want a game that receives updates and Pokemon that are easier to trade and transfer. Sword and Shield, while controversial games, offer so much more to the world of pokemon. The only cool thing post-game is riding on flying pokemon. You can beat the "species masters", but that doesn't sound fun at all. You can rechallenge the gym leaders but they're a joke. After you beat the Elite 4 and Champion, that's it.

Everytime you reach a small route, you will be unable to continue forward and have to get off your pokemon. Every time you hit a wall, you will get off your pokemon. You will not be challenged at all at any point. You can use candies to give your lvl 40 pokemon the stats of lvl 100 pokemon. Your starter is OP with all 31 IVs and OP stats. You have to move your Switch screen just like in Pokemon Go. Unless you actively want to be moving, it is annoying. Here's a few reasons I would not recommend it:Ĭatching mechanics are annoying. At first it was fun playing the main Kanto region plot again after not touching it since FRLG, but they really simplified it.
